Design Intent: The homeowners were originally thinking of adding a detached garage with an in-law apartment above. They did not want the garage to be the first thing you see when entering the driveway. The decision was made to use the existing daylight basement, on one end of the house, to actually attach a garage which would allow a seamless transition to access the in-law apartment, above the garage, from the first floor of the existing house. The homeowners also did not want to disturb the existing stone retaining wall in front of the house so there was an extension added between the existing house and garage to allow access without disturbing the wall. The added advantage of the extension was that it also provided a buffer between the apartment and the existing home.
